Precision-Planned Upper Jaw Expansion
At our practice, we provide completely custom MARPE (Mini-Implant Assisted Rapid Palatal Expansion) treatment using advanced digital planning and imaging technology.
Every MARPE appliance is designed using a combination of 3D digital scans and CBCT imaging to evaluate your anatomy and determine the ideal position for the appliance and supporting mini-implants. We work closely with Partners Dental Studio to create a customized treatment plan tailored to each patient.
Our primary goal is to improve the structure and expansion of the upper jaw while supporting long-term orthodontic health, function, and stability.
Why Upper Jaw Expansion Matters
The upper jaw plays an important role in how the teeth fit together, how the bite functions, and the amount of space available for alignment.
When the upper jaw is underdeveloped or constricted, it may contribute to:
- Dental crowding
- Crossbites
- Limited arch width
- Bite discrepancies
- Challenges achieving ideal orthodontic alignment
Upper jaw expansion allows us to address these concerns at their source while creating additional space for orthodontic treatment.
A Customized Approach to MARPE
Not all MARPE treatment is the same.
Our approach utilizes:
- Digital 3D intraoral scanning
- CBCT (3D X-ray) imaging
- Virtual treatment planning
- Precise mini-implant positioning
- Collaboration with Partners Dental Studio
This planning process allows us to customize treatment based on each patient’s anatomy and treatment goals.
MARPE for Adult Patients
As we get older, expansion of the upper jaw becomes more challenging because the bones become increasingly mature and resistant to change.
MARPE provides an option for many adult patients who require upper jaw expansion and are seeking alternatives to more invasive treatment approaches.
By utilizing mini-implants to support the appliance, MARPE can achieve changes that may not be possible with traditional tooth-supported expanders alone.
Airway and Breathing Considerations
There is ongoing research exploring the relationship between upper jaw expansion, nasal anatomy, and breathing.
Because the upper jaw forms part of the structure surrounding the nasal cavity, expansion may influence the size of the nasal passageway in some patients.
However, breathing and sleep-related concerns are complex and influenced by many factors beyond jaw structure alone.
For that reason:
- Airway improvements cannot be guaranteed
- MARPE is not prescribed as a treatment for sleep disorders
- Individual responses vary significantly
Our focus remains on improving upper jaw structure and achieving the best possible orthodontic outcome for each patient.
What to Expect
Treatment typically includes:
- Comprehensive evaluation and imaging
- Digital treatment planning
- Custom MARPE fabrication
- Placement of the appliance and mini-implants
- Guided expansion and monitoring
- Stabilization and orthodontic treatment as needed
Each treatment plan is customized based on the patient’s age, anatomy, and orthodontic goals.
